Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5060: The First One, With Tritium

This is where the Aquanaut starts. Launched in 1997, the 5060A took the Nautilus idea and made it younger and more wearable: a 36mm steel case, an embossed dial, and for the first time from Patek, a composite strap. It was not universally loved at the time. Traditionalists thought rubber was beneath the brand. Three decades on, it is the reference every Aquanaut since has been measured against.

The dial and hands here are tritium, which places this example in the earliest production and gives it something later Luminova pieces can never have: the capacity to age. Tritium warms and settles unevenly over decades in a way modern lume simply does not. For collectors who chase first references rather than current heat, this is the one that matters, and it arrives with the extract to place it precisely.
