Patek Philippe 5060SR: The Missing Link Between Nautilus and Aquanaut

Before the Aquanaut had a name, it had this. The 5060S arrived in 1996, a year ahead of the first officially named Aquanaut, and it is the watch that shows Patek working the idea out in real time. It carries the Roman numeral dial and leaf hands of the Nautilus 3800, but the case has been redesigned: 35mm, with proper lugs and none of the Nautilus ears, built for a leather strap rather than an integrated bracelet.

In rose gold it is close to unfindable. The 5060S was produced mainly in yellow gold, with the SR far rarer, and the combination of a porthole case, a date aperture and applied rose gold Romans on opaline is genuinely strange in the best way. Anyone who knows the Aquanaut by its embossed dial and composite strap will not immediately read this as family. That is exactly the point. Officially part of the Nautilus timeline, it is the direct forerunner of everything the Aquanaut became, and the kind of reference that only makes sense to collectors who follow the story rather than the model name.
