When Rolex launched the Day-Date in 1956, it offered it in gold and in platinum from the very start. Yet for more than sixty years the platinum version came with one small difference: a smooth, domed bezel. Every gold Day-Date wore the fluted bezel that has become the Rolex signature, but platinum was simply too difficult to machine and polish into those sharp, precise facets. The smooth bezel became the quiet tell of the platinum President.
That changed in 2022. After years of developing a new in house manufacturing process, Rolex introduced the 228236, the first Day-Date with a fluted bezel made in 950 platinum. From that moment on, the platinum Day-Date was offered only with a fluted or gem set bezel, and the smooth bezel was retired.
The ice blue dial remains the platinum giveaway. Rolex reserves it for its platinum watches, and on this example it is paired with raised Roman numerals, one of the most classic configurations of the reference. Inside sits the caliber 3255 with a 70 hour power reserve, and the whole watch rides on the President bracelet, created for the Day-Date at its launch in 1956 and here made entirely in platinum.
This example dates from 2025, comes as a full set in new condition, and was sourced for a client to mark the year his son was born. A watch that will carry that date for the rest of its life.
