Rolex Lady Datejust 6917: Solid Gold, on the Bracelet You Do Not Expect

Say solid gold Lady Datejust and almost everyone pictures a President bracelet. That is the default, the one that shows up in every catalogue photo and every auction listing. This 1979 example does something different: 18k yellow gold throughout, but on a Jubilee, with a folding clasp and every link still present. The five link Jubilee was designed for the Datejust in 1945 and it has always been the more relaxed of the two, softer on the wrist and far less formal. In full gold it becomes something you very rarely see in the wild.

The 6917 is the reference that carried the Lady Datejust through the late seventies and early eighties. A 26mm case, fluted gold bezel, the champagne dial that suits gold better than any other colour, and the automatic caliber 2030 inside. The crystal is plexiglass, which is a large part of the charm: it gives the dial that soft, slightly warm depth that no sapphire watch has been able to reproduce since.

Provenance & Condition
Excellent for a watch from 1979, honestly described rather than oversold. It carries the small marks of a life properly lived, and nothing that detracts from how it reads on the wrist. It comes with its paperwork and the original hang tag still attached.
